A Cure For PMS: Fact Or Fiction?
Since time began, the blessing of womanhood has held a double-edged sword for its initiates. For along with the beauty and privilege of childbirth comes the dreaded monthly burden of preparation which carries a multitude of names. You may know her as “monthlies,” “periods” or even “Aunt Flo,” but regardless of the moniker you assign her, her presence rarely makes a graceful entrance. In fact, over 90 million women across the world suffer her ill effects. Painful cramps, heavy bleeding, fibroids, ovarian cysts and a host of other feminine reproductive issues plague millions of women each and every month, year in and year out.
Many women suffer from painful cramps and tirelessly search for ways to cope. Luckily there are ways to reduce painful periods which do not involve drugs, hormone therapy or invasive surgeries. Here are 5 natural ways to ease the pain and inconvenience during that time of the month:
Chug A Lug– I know you’ve heard this countless times and yet still want to cling to a daily cup of coffee or sugary soda fix. But water really is nature’s gold-mine in terms of optimal health. And particularly during your menstrual cycle, you want to flush out as many toxins as possible. So make it your goal to have a glass of water every other waking hour and even get flawless-looking skin as an added bonus.
Try Belly-dancing — When you feel achy, tender and bloated, this is probably the last thing you want to do, but strangely enough, regular exercise helps to relax the tense muscles and lessens pain from cramps. Give belly-dancing a try, the abdominal movements of this exotic dance are believed to disrupt the stagnant energy in the pelvic area, a source of fibroids according to some holistic practitioners. Besides, belly-dancing has a double benefit, not only will you ease painful cramps but also increase your sexual confidence as well.
‘Just Say No’ To Mr. Moo — by eliminating dairy, salt and processed meats from your diet. Diet plays a major role in everyone’s overall health and especially the reproductive health of women. The artificial hormones injected into animal products (to make them grow bigger, produce more meat and by-products) deposit into the woman’s fatty tissues which create a toxic environment. If going cold turkey seems too daunting a task, eliminate one vice at a time. Start with whole milk for example, instead try soy, rice or almond milk in your cereal or baking and progress from there. And stay away from these foods altogether starting two weeks before your cycle until you are able to cut them out completely.
Take Your Vitamins — Studies have shown that calcium supplements may reduce many PMS related symptoms and a deficiency of magnesium may be associated with PMS as well. Note that Vitamin D3 is needed to absorb the calcium and magnesium sufficiently. Some helpful herbs include cramp bark, milk thistle and valerian root. A quick internet search will provide additional herbal treatments and teas for menstrual cramp relief.
Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables — Incorporate foods that are high in phytoestrogens such as soy, flaxseeds, nuts, whole grains, apples, fennel, and alfalfa to help minimize symptoms.
Keep in mind that painful cramps can be onset by a variety of reasons, and not all remedies will work for every woman. Unfortunately, there is no “one-size-fits-all” cure for feminine issues so its best to experiment with different remedies starting with the modification of your diet. Herbal treatments, acupuncture and a positive mindset are also strategies that go a long way in creating positive reproductive health and, above all, a healthy womb.
See your physician for additional testing if the symptoms are unusually severe. They can perform an ultra-sound to take a closer look at what’s going on on the inside. But be diligent in your search for safe, effective, natural cures. If your current physician is not familiar nor receptive to natural, holistic approaches then find one who is. Your health is your responsibility and you do have the power to move it in the direction of positive healing. Be Well.
